Recently I was visiting with someone and the comment was made, “these days almost everyone has some sort of mental issue.” It was not in a judgmental or condemning manner, but said with sadness for the state of man. I was reminded of this as I read my Bible this morning and came to the scripture in Isaiah…
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. (26:3 KJV)
Our mind is a powerful thing. We can set our minds to do almost anything and accomplish it. Why then, is it so easy to loose focus, allow depression, anxiety, fear, etc. into our minds? Life has ups and downs for all of us. So…how does one person make it through and seem stronger because of their circumstances and another falls into a downward spiral? I believe it comes back to the mind being stayed on Jesus. It sounds so simple and maybe a little cliche but it’s true, and, in some seasons of life, even harder than it sounds.
How do we keep our mind stayed on HIM?
- Daily prayer – remembering to pray for others and not only our situations
- Putting the Word of God in our hearts (once again, DAILY)
- Banishing negative or anxious thoughts and fear from our mind – how? When the thoughts come – quote scripture, pray, think on good things (Philippians 4:8)
- Post scripture around your home that encourage and uplift you
- Remember it’s not all about us – there’s a bigger picture and with patience we will see it – also, serving and giving to others gets our mind off our own situations
We definitely have control over where we allow our minds to wonder. By dwelling on a bad situation or negativity, we invite depression and all it’s cousins into our life.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. (Philippians 4:7-9 KJV)
Do you want peace in your life and mind? Keep your mind stayed on JESUS. He will give you PERFECT PEACE, a peace that goes beyond our understanding. We can live a consistent, content life in any situation, whether good or bad, when we keep our focus on HIM.
Here are a few more verses to encourage:
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV)
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2 NIV)
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (2 Corinthians 10:5 KJV)
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11 KJV)
